Westfield development site






The main structure in this building is concerete. This centre is consist of different usage of materials such as glass, stone, comosite sheet and metal. It can clearly shows the functional purpose of concrte that gives the ability to building to cover themselves with different materials depend on situation.
Columns, floors and ceiling are created with concrete. The usage of insulation sheet on ceiling is obviouse in photos and still equipments such as air condition ducts should be cover in this building.
Concrete is one of those materials and structure systems which gives a great ability to builder to create their ideas realistic in 3D buildings.

Rideal show area (shopping)

This building is located in Brougham street in Geelong. The function of this building is a shopping and showing area for electrical products. The main structure of this building is steel structure. Columns and beams are connected to each other by using bolts and they have covered with color skin for additional protection.
There is a large span without any columns inside and load transfer to the columns in the corner through the beams that created frames on the ceiling.

Two different type of beams have used in this area to support loads. As it is obviouse in this photo beam has connected to the columns and has become more durable by Hauching to increase the stability of structure. The roof has covered with insulation safety mesh which is located between outside skin and inside beams. Metal skin sheet is also added to this insulation to increase its influence.

Evidence of research undertaken for the Major Project

Warehouse, Baselstrasse 91, Hof (yard), Laufen 1986-1987 by Herzog and de Mouren



This building is consits of a steel structure, 50 m long, 26 m wide and 17 m high. The warehouse takes the form of a large simple building. "The structure appears to rest on ribs which can be seen protruding below the bottom-most of these layers. They are attached to the slab which has been cast directly on the rocky ground forming the foundation of the warehouse".

3D Configuration of Warehouse




These are images of Warehouse on Microstation. I chose portal frame construction system to design needed space. The detail that I used are related to the building of Herzog & de Meuron that shown on plan and section.

Steel reinforcing in concrete

Reinforcing steel use in concrete to make it strenght and hold the concrete. It also protect concrete from cracking and limit it to happen in concrete. Concretes that carries heavy loads such as footing, foundation walls and specially columns requier reinforcing steel.

Portal frames can be used in timber for commercial and industrial buildings with large spans.
These diagrams show different usage of timber portal frames in different usages.

This company charactrised its products to create large spans and buildings by the usage of, strongest connections, create usable internal space and give the ability of creation for different purposes. Portal frames are consist of thick galvanised steel and they fix together through bolts to make it more stronger.

Westfield shopping centre's car park

Structure of this area is a combination of concrete columns and steel beams.
Steel beams are covered by cement for additional protection

There is two different kinds of beams in dimensions and that's because of the load that they were expected to support.

TAC Building

TAC building is located in Brougham street in Geelong (behind Waterfront campus).
These two columns are incomplete and they are waiting for the next floor to add on top of them. Steels that are coming out of the concrete columns give the ability of extension for next levels.
This building is constructing by reinforced concrete, there is supporting beams and columns till concrete construction take its place.
Concrete in this building is Pre-cast and transport from factory to site which gives higher quality control in materials.

Tensile Structure in Melbourne Central Tower



Melbourne Central Tower has cable structure in the entrance of the tower. This kind of structure is Tensile structure which protect building from both tension and compression forces. These cables are connected to each other in one point that is called joint. These cables transfer forces to the base of the building.
